Great Wall of China, Travel and Tourism Guide to China

One of the finest vacation settings I have ever had the opportunity to visit has been the Great Wall of China. Virtually everyone has heard of this gigantic sandstone wall known as the Great Wall of China. Every school child has been taught about this marvel of engineering. The Great Wall of China was constructed principally to protect the Chinese Empire from the invading Mongolians.

After two trips to the Great Wall of China I have discovered that although it presents a timeless charm to us tourists, the scenery varies with the seasons in which you visit it. When I visited it in the spring time I got an utterly different scene. In spring the trees and plants turned a stunning green, the wall rambled among the thriving vegetation. Everything about the wall looked so fresh and pure. This for me was a pleasant time to visit the wall as I precluded the crowd of tourists frequently visiting in the summer and autumn. My second visit was during the fall season, the mountains were blanketed by colors, creating an astounding view and the weather throughout this visit was very pleasant. This season could also have been one of the best seasons for me to visit the Great Wall of China.

I look forward to an additional trip to the Great Wall of China during a winter season as I have been informed that the mountains and the wall itself are enveloped with a carpet of snow in the winter presenting an awe-inspiring snowy scene.

I found it would be an impossible undertaking to ever attempt to walk the total distance of the wall in view of the fact that the length of the Great Wall of China has been estimated at over 3,720 miles long. That would be an extensive morning stroll. I personally have only walked about three miles one way.

While on my last visit to the wall an elderly Chinese gentleman informed me that according to ancient records it has been reported that at least one million slaves and prisoners of war were employed to construct the wall. During the construction many laborers died from fatigue or starvation while working on this enormous task. Their bodies were added to the debris and masonry as the quickest method of disposal. He further stated that for centuries, the Great Wall of China was branded as “the longest cemetery in the world.”
